Choose The Right Colours, Patterns & Textures For Your Space

Fabric and Art Shop Banner, Fabric Swatches and Flower Art Print

Decorating a space is more than just filling it with items, it’s about creating a feeling. Whether you’re looking to bring warmth into your home or searching for unique pieces, the right fabric decorations, art and even wallpaper can completely transform a room. But with so many options, where do you start?

As an artist and designer, I’ve always been drawn to the way colour, texture and pattern interact. My designs are inspired by nature and the ethereal, using soft, muted tones and simple yet textured patterns to bring a sense of calm and individuality to a space. If you’re looking to add fabric decorations, prints or wallpaper to your home, here are some of my favourite tips to help you choose pieces that truly work for you.

Start with a Feeling….

Before thinking about specific colours or patterns, ask yourself: How do I want this space to feel? Cosy and warm? Light and airy? Calming and serene? Colour and texture play a huge role in setting the mood.

I would suggest creating a Moodboard, gather images of patterns, decor, colours and textures you love and see what works together.

Soft, muted tones and natural textures create a peaceful environment, while bolder contrasts add energy and depth. I always encourage people to trust their instincts, if a colour or pattern makes you feel good, it’s probably the right choice.

I’ve always loved colour and with my background in makeup I am able to see the different undertones within colours and I bring the same approach to my art and designs. When choosing colours for your space, think beyond just “blue” or “green”, look at the warmth, coolness and depth of a shade.

A simple way to create a harmonious palette is to:

  • Use one statement colour and build around it with complementary shades.
  • Find inspiration, look at nature, you will find colours that match effortlessly. Photograph colours that catch your eye or inspire you, a coloured sky, a sunset, a field of wildflowers or even a weathered tree can provide the perfect palette. Even cinematic films can offer stunning colour palettes to inspire you.
  • When mixing colours, balance bold shades with softer tones to create contrast without overwhelming the space. Try layering different shades to discover which colours complement each other.

I’m constantly inspired by the landscape around me. The hills, soft blue grey skies and muted greens of the countryside all influence my designs. I often take photos when I’m out walking, whether it’s the warm rust of autumn leaves or a field of daffodils. These snapshots serve as my personal colour library.

I also find inspiration in everyday moments, rainbows after a rain shower, the texture of tree bark, winding streams or even the colour of a beautifully painted door. I store these ideas away and when I sit down to create, they naturally make their way into my work.

Patterns bring personality to a room, but layering them well is key. If you love the idea of mixing prints but aren’t sure how to do it, try this approach:

  • Vary the scale, a larger busy print pairs well with a smaller more delicate one.
  • Keep a common colour, if two patterns share a similar tone, they will naturally feel cohesive.
  • Use texture as a subtle pattern, not all patterns have to be bold. A textured fabric or wallpaper adds depth without being overpowering.

For example, if you love floral prints but worry about them feeling too busy, try pairing it with a soft simple design with texture in a complementary shade. This creates interest without being overwhelming. Using a variety of textures within a space helps bring it to life, adding character and dimension.

Some Colour And Design Inspiration

Once you’ve chosen the right colours and patterns, think about placement. Here are some ways to incorporate them into your space:

  • Cushions and Throws: A simple way to add interest.
  • Curtains or Roman Blinds: A great way to introduce pattern without overwhelming a room.
  • Upholstery: A statement chair in a beautiful fabric can make a space feel unique.
  • Wallpaper: A feature wall with a textured print can transform a space without making it feel too busy.
  • Wall Art: Art prints bring a finished, personal touch to any room.

If you’re decorating multiple spaces in your home, it’s important to create a sense of flow. Rooms don’t have to match perfectly but they should feel connected. You can achieve this by:

  • Repeating a colour in small ways, perhaps a soft sage green appears in cushions in one room and in a piece of wall art or wallpaper in another.
  • Using different patterns with a shared element or a similar texture or tone.
  • Keeping a consistent mood throughout, whether that’s warm and inviting or cool and airy.

At the end of the day, designing a space is personal and should be a fun experience. Trends come and go but your connection to a colour, a pattern or a piece of art is what makes your home feel like yours. If something speaks to you, trust that feeling.

I hope this helps you feel more confident in choosing fabric, prints and wallpaper for your space! Finding pieces that bring you a sense of calm and warmth is always worth it.
